What is AMP?

AMP is a key program in the OSU IT Strategic Roadmap. The roadmap represents work that is critical to deepening our capacity and creating new capabilities that will enable OSU to deliver on its core mission of teaching and learning, research and extension and engagement.

In 1992, Oregon State University computerized many of its administrative processes with the purchase and integration of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, Banner. Banner moved us from a paper process to an online database where transactional data could be collected, stored, and viewed by administrative teams focused on admissions, financial aid, student retention, and human resources — all processes that have become increasingly reliant on modern technology. 30 years later, Oregon State University is still relying on Banner, which carries with it three decades of technical debt, administrative inefficiencies and hinders our ability to deliver modern digital interactions that our students and employees have come to expect. The Administrative Modernization Program (AMP) will allow Oregon State University to modernize its ERP, re-engineer core administrative HR, student, and finance tools and processes, and deploy AI and automated workflows in the cloud. This light and lean cloud-based approach enables better institutional agility and adaptability, exceptionally user-friendly design for students, faculty, staff and administration who interact with OSU.

Value and Benefits

AMP will benefit every corner of Oregon State University including the university's missions in teaching and learning, research, extension and engagement. Many enabling and administrative workflows will be improved by AMP as well. The benefits of AMP and the values of the program are numerous, but a selection of the most impactful benefits can be found below.

Enhances the OSU Experience

Improves the student and parent experience of supported processes like financial aid and registration.

Makes it easier for student and credit transfers to OSU.

Builds on enterprise, university-wide systems to break down silos and independent systems with separate and disconnected data, resulting in less complexity facing IT users.

Allows us to tailor IT, administrative, research, and educational services to students, faculty, staff, researchers and other OSU community members.

OSU community members will not only be aware of available tools, data, and technologies, but will also be trained and supported in how to use them.

Improves OSU’s overall competitiveness in the world market through modern technologies by putting students and community members first, and allows us to operate within our limited means to achieve inclusive excellence.

More Equitable, Inclusive and Accessible Experiences

Allows the university to more easily and directly invest in efforts to improve diversity and inclusion.

Enables OSU to deliver more accessible transactional experiences by delivering a user experience that meets or exceeds our commitment to accessibility standards.

Allows us to break down barriers and build more equitable experiences for first-generation college students, students who do not speak English as a first language, and other marginalized groups.

Enables data-informed decision making

Provides quality source data on the student experience.

Allows panoramic information and analytical facilities.

Increases data quality through better UI, self-service and automated workflows for enterprise resource management (HR, financial, etc.)

Reduced Administrative Overhead and Waste

Smooth functioning of daily processes.

Enhancement of work efficiency.

Quick and accurate decision making and swift distribution of information.

Financial Benefits

Lowers cost of enabling activities across the board, allowing the university to focus resources on the academic mission and other value streams.

Lowers technical debt and positions IT to be able to quickly adapt and grow with the university.

Supports financial transparency and accountability across the university.

Supports the Oregon Tech Sector

Provides students with a modern technology experience and prepares them to operate within the tech sector after graduation.

Enables OSU to deliver the right workforce for the Oregon tech sector.

Our Planned Approach

Our approach to this work begins with evaluating and potentially redesigning all our business processes based on desired customer journeys. An approach like this will also require significant organizational change management, a willingness to work together across and outside the organization, and a commitment to equity and inclusivity as we design solutions for a broad and diverse collection of customers and community members.

We are not taking on this ambitious work alone — OSU is partnering with implementation partners who specialize in higher education to deliver on our pioneering vision. We will document every step of our work in order to support and guide other Oregon institutions who may follow in similar transformative efforts.
